Drawing of the internal layout, provided by the archive of the Russian Geographical Society.

This wooden sailing boat, which did not have an engine, rescued fishermen and their gear from Varanger Bay to Teriberka and from Cape Set-Navolok to Vostochnaya Litsa Bay from 1903 to 1941.

The aim of the project is to restore the historical memory of the achievements of the rescue service on the Murman coast at the beginning of the twentieth century, to familiarize young people with good seamanship, carpentry and metalwork.

The construction of a replica of the historic sailing ship is a unique event for the Murmansk region, which will become an attraction for tourists, youth, shipbuilders, students, and everyone who loves our Far North and the Ocean.

The project implementation period is 2022-2027.

  • Survey of Posyet Island with photogrammetry of the first rescue station on Murman, 2022
Posyet Island, Rynda camp. Photo by Oleg Senov.

Since time immemorial, the coast of the Barents Sea has attracted Pomors, who, in their small but seaworthy boats, came from their native villages located on the shores of the White Sea for seasonal fishing. Periodically, they suffered from disaster due to the unpredictability of the elements.

The first rescue station was built on the island in Rynda Bay in 1902. With the consent of the emperor, the island was named after the first chairman of the Imperial Russian Water Rescue Society, Konstantin Posyet. The plan of the station has been preserved, the location of buildings and structures are known.

Using this data, our team is going to organize and conduct research work on the Posyet Island in the summer 2022.

Main tasks:

1. Carry out photogrammetry of the Posyet Island.

2. Based on the collected data and archival drawings, create a 3D model of the object with the possibility of conducting virtual tours of the Rescue Station and the territory of the island.

3. Install a memorial sign «Remarkable Cross».

4. On the adjacent shores, carry out research work to search for the skeletons of wooden boats (Pechnaya Bay, Shubina Bay, Krasnaya Bay).

The project implementation period is summer 2022.
